Micro Needling with Dr. Pen M8S: Enhance Your Skin’s Natural Beauty

Micro needling has been a buzzword in the skincare world for years, and a little over a year ago, I decided to embark on my own journey using the Dr. Pen M8S. Previously my micro needling treatments were conducted at a salon which as you can expect can be quite costly 💰over time! After extensive research and reading several reviews, I invested in this device to see if it could truly deliver the glowing, youthful skin it promised. Spoiler alert: it did not disappoint and by month 2 of consistent use I’m pleased to say I started to see some improvements to tone and texture. Here’s a breakdown of my year-long experience, my insights, and my recommendations for those considering microneedling.

Why I Chose the Dr. Pen M8S

The Dr. Pen M8S is often touted as a professional-grade microneedling device that’s easy to use at home. What drew me to this device were its standout features:

Wireless Operation: The cordless design makes it convenient and easy to handle. Additionally the USB-C enables easy use when travelling or if you live in a different country where the power plug may not be compatible.

Adjustable Needle Depths: This allowed me to customize the treatment depending on the target area (e.g., deeper for acne scars, lighter for general skin rejuvenation). Usually on the forehead I use a depth of 0.5mm and on the fattier parts of the face such as checks I would increase this to 2.5mm for the deeper pores. Dependant on your pain tolerance numbing cream may be required which can be picked up at most pharmacies.

Multiple Speed Levels: The varied speed settings provided flexibility to cater to my skin’s sensitivity. The Dr Pen M8S has 6 variable speed levels and quiet operation.

Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to regular microneedling sessions at a dermatologist’s office, the M8S was a one-time investment that paid for itself within a few months. In the past, salon sessions in Sydney Australia have cost around $300+. Personally the results across both in salon and at home for me are comparable and I value the convenience of at home treatments.

I purchased my pen just over a year ago at $350 AUD however as newer models are on the market the Dr Pen M8S price now is almost half what I paid! 😳 Check out the below product review video which I hope helps you make an informed decision.

What My Routine Looks Like

I started with treatments every 4-6 weeks, as over-microneedling can do more harm than good. Downtime is minimal however I’d suggest leaving a day or two immediately after to fully recovery and where you can please stay away from the sun as your skin recovers!

Each session was broken down into simple steps:

1. Preparation: I thoroughly cleansed my face and used a numbing cream for added comfort. Numb master and Numbit have been my go to as it’s easy to apply and takes effect relatively fast.

2. Using the Dr. Pen M8S: I adjusted the needle depth (typically 0.5mm for general rejuvenation, up to 2.5mm for acne scars) and worked in sections. The device was easy to control and feels study in my hand. There are various techniques which can be leveraged however I have found stamping to be ideal as gliding the pen may create microscopic tears in the skin (although I have tried this in the past too so if this is your preference then just ensure there is slip which can be created with serums). Tip – plan ahead and keep some spare cartridges ready for when the provided ones run out.

3. Post-Treatment Care: I applied a soothing hyaluronic acid serum immediately after each session to calm my skin and promote healing.

4. Recovery: For the next few days, I avoided direct sunlight, heavy makeup, and exfoliating products. My go-to products during recovery included a gentle cleanser, a hydrating moisturizer, and SPF 50 sunscreen.

What I found after a year of consistent use:

Texture Improvement: Within the first three months, I noticed my skin becoming significantly smoother, with reduced pore size and a more even tone. Family and friends also commented that my skin looked healthier

Acne Scars: By month six, my deeper acne scars were visibly reduced—something I hadn’t achieved with other treatments. I have tried laser (PicoSure), injectables, RF frequency and various other treatments. These somewhat improved my skin texture however the most effective treatment I have found is micro needling – personally i feel my skin looks healthier, pores are reduced in size and dead skin removed to allow more collagen growth.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Over the year, fine lines on my forehead have softened, and my overall complexion appeared plumper and more youthful.

Glow Factor: Friends and family began commenting on my “glow,” and my skin looked healthier even without makeup.

What I Loved Most

• The control and customization of the Dr. Pen M8S made every session feel tailored to my skin’s needs. 6 speeds and needle depth of 0.2mm to 2.5mm

• The cost savings were immense compared to professional treatments, and the results were comparable.. Every dollar counts!

• It was a non-invasive solution that fit seamlessly into my skincare routine without requiring too much downtime (may experience dryness and redness a few days immediately after).

Tips for Beginners

1. Start Slow: Don’t go for deep needle depths or frequent sessions right away. Let your skin adjust.

2. Invest in Sterile Cartridges: Always use new, sealed needle cartridges for every session to prevent infections. Recommend to purchase alcohol spray and apply this to the needles, and face after removing the numbing cream.

3. Use High-Quality Serums: After microneedling, your skin is more absorbent. Opt for products with clean, hydrating ingredients like the hyaluronic acid serum 1% during and after needling which I have been using for a year now. This also provides slip (moisture) while needling which allows easy navigation around the face.

4. Patience is Key: Results build over time. Don’t expect overnight miracles but trust the process. To build a habit I\’d suggest adding a calendar reminder every 4-6 weeks for self care.

During this time I spend a good few hours treating myself by streaming my face to open up the pores, micro needling and mask treatments. Sense Nano Ionic face streamer I can not live without and actually use 3 times a week which I have found decongests the pores before resuming my night skin care regime.

5. Prioritize Aftercare: Protect your skin with sunscreen, avoid harsh products, and focus on hydration.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely and I wish I had started this journey earlier! After a year with the Dr. Pen M8S, my skin has never looked or felt better (although there is still a way to go before I am satisfied with the size of my pores especially on the nose and cheek areas). Whether you’re looking to reduce scars, boost collagen, or simply achieve that coveted glow, this device is a game-changer. It does require commitment and proper technique, but the results are well worth the effort.

If you’re considering microneedling at home, the Dr. Pen M8S is an excellent choice. Just remember to do your research, follow best practices, and always listen to your skin!
